On this day in 1888, an article appeared in the San Francisco Examiner detailing three bizarre and unexplained disappearances. The article, tittle “Whither“, was followed by a scientific hypothesis, detailing possible explanations. The article was later determined to have been written by author Ambrose Bierce, the three stories being identified as his works Difficulty Crossing a Field, the Unfinished Race, and Charles Ashmore’s Trail. Bierce himself would disappear under bizarre and unexplained circumstances in 1913, in Mexico. His final written words, in a letter to a friend: “As to me, I leave here tomorrow for an unknown destination.”
