On this day in 1872, the final entry was made in the log book of the Mary Celeste citing the ship’s position at the time as being 6 miles northeast of Santa Maria, easternmost island of the Azores, close enough to see land. 9 days later the ship was found in perfect condition, fully supplied, but abandoned, floating near the Azores. No trace of the crew was ever discovered and it remains one of the most perplexing maritime mysteries in history.
