On this day in 1902, archeologist Valerios Stais, discovered a gear embedded in a rock recovered from an ancient shipwreck near the Greek island of Antikythera. Other pieces of the device were soon recovered, sparking a mystery that has endured for over a century. The Antikythera Mechanism, as it has become known, is said to be the worlds oldest computer, dating back to late 2nd century BC.
