On this day in 1919, a storage vat containing 2.3 million gallons of molasses burst in Boston’s north end, flooding the streets with syrup. 21 people perished in the flood and an additional 150 people were injured in the sticky deluge. Witnesses claimed that the area smelled like maple syrup up to ten years after the event.
