On this day in in 1817, the crew of the schooner, Caravan, witnessed a 60 foot sea serpent swimming along side their vessel off the coast of Gloucester, Massachusetts, The creature was reported to have a hump back and the head of a turtle. The men aboard the Caravan, fired their cannon at the creature (as one does) at which time it retreated beneath the waves. The Gloucester Sea Serpent continued to “terrorize” sailors for several years, becoming one of the most documented cryptid sightings in history.
